Independent researcher and curator Eda Yiğit gave the third talk of Değiş Tokuş Talks on Friday evening of July 2, 2021, titled ‘The Invisible Subjects of the Precariat: Artists During the Pandemic’. (The talk is in Turkish)

Yiğit started her discussion by focusing on the definition of precariat/precarity terms, which started to be used in a more widespread fashion from 2000s onwards with the changing nature of labor. She then unpacked concepts relating to losing vocational identity, and representation; precarity (as in not having any protection from harm), vulnerability, liability, and Bourdieu, Standing and Butler’s interpretations of them. Yiğit, then comprehensively shared the results of her 39-question survey administered during the first wave of the pandemic, with participation of 150 artists via open sources. She finished her presentation by mentioning some of the collective production practices developed and used during the same period. About Eda Yiğit:

Eda Yiğit received her bachelor’s degree from the Department of City Planning, and her master's degree in Urban Planning at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Yiğit currently continues her research on social memory at the Sociology Department doctoral program at the same university. Yiğit works in the fields of oral history, museology and contemporary art. She has worked as an exhibition, content, and organizational coordinator at Karşı Sanat Çalışmaları between 2015-2020 and at ARTIST/TÜYAP Art Fair between 2016-2019. Her chronological documentation titled "Gezi Resistance May 27-June18, 2013" was published in 2013, and her book titled "Invisible Subjects of the Precariat: Artists During the Pandemic" was published in 2021. Yiğit, who has been working as an independent researcher lately, is one of the founding members of BUM Atelier, while she still works as an editor of Orta Format online magazine.
